We continue to like the College Saving Iowa plan for its simple investment approach and its diversified lineup of age-based options designed to appeal to a broad range of investors. A state tax deduction on contributions--$2,685 per beneficiary account in 2008 (adjusted annually for inflation)--also enhances the plan's appeal for Iowa residents. In addition, the plan's growth over the years has allowed economies of scale to be passed on to investors. The annual flat fee is now 0.52% of assets (down from 0.62% of assets a few years ago). That may not be as cheap as other Vanguard all-index options in Ohio, Nevada, and Utah, but the tax breaks and soundly-constructed portfolios make it a good value for residents.(Information as of 03/09/2009) |
